Frequently Asked Questions

What is Europrivacy?
Europrivacy is a certification methodology and scheme developed through European research programmes to simplify, enhance, and certify compliance with GDPR and other privacy regulations. When delivered under Article 42 GDPR, Europrivacy certificates are recognised in all EU jurisdictions, and the criteria have also been approved for use as a European Data Protection Seal outside the EU/EEA and as a mechanism for international data transfers under Article 46 GDPR.
What is the difference between regular GDPR certification and Art. 46 certification?
Regular certification (Art. 42/43 GDPR) is available to any data controller or processor subject to the GDPR. Certification under Art. 46 GDPR is specifically for data importers outside the EU/EEA who receive data from a European data exporter — to be legally valid for international transfers it must be complemented by binding and enforceable contractual instruments.
Why should non-European companies consider GDPR certification?
It builds trust by demonstrating compliance, simplifies data transfers with certified processors, reduces legal and due-diligence costs, and is the only mechanism recognised by Art. 25 GDPR to demonstrate data protection by design and by default. Certification relies on independent audits rather than self-declared commitments, giving it higher reliability than mechanisms like Standard Contractual Clauses.
Who can join the Europrivacy Community?
Certified or in-training Data Protection Officers, Implementers, Auditors, and official partners of the Europrivacy certification scheme.
How do I choose a membership plan?
Pick the plan that matches your role. DPOs, Implementers, and Auditors have dedicated self-service plans; Partner and institutional plans are by invitation.
What do I get access to as a member?
The document library (templates, criteria checklists, reference material), the community forum, regulatory alerts, and role-specific tools.
